Parts of the popular Dakota Regional Rail Trail will be closed periodically to bicyclists, walkers, runners and others this summer to accommodate a resurfacing project.

Work is scheduled along roughly 14 miles of the trail, from St. Bonifacius to Wayzata, in four successive phases, each just under two weeks long, from July 7 to Aug. 29. There will be no posted detours.

The trail runs through numerous communities and woods, over wetlands and around parts of Lakes Waconia and Minnetonka. One stretch, between Spring Park and Mound, attracts more than 300,000 users per year, according to Three Rivers Parks. Nearly 140,000 bicyclists ride the entire distance from Wayzata to St. Bonifacius. The trail continues another 12 miles west from St. Bonifacius to Mayer.

The closures:

July 7-July 19: St. Bonifacius to County Road 110 (Minnetrista).

July 21-Aug. 4: County Road 110 (Minnetrista) to County Road 51 (Spring Park).

Aug. 4-Aug. 16: Arcola Bridge (Minnetonka Beach) to Wayzata.

Aug. 18-Aug. 29: County Road 51 (Spring Park) to Arcola Bridge (Minnetonka Beach).
