Northport Elementary picked for art program

The Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley has chosen Northport Elementary in Brooklyn Center as one of four schools to participate in Turnaround Arts: Minnesota, a national initiative designed to narrow the achievement gap and improve student engagement through the arts. Northport is part of the Robbinsdale Area school district.

The other Minnesota schools selected to participate in the two-year school-improvement program are Bethune Elementary in Minneapolis, Red Lake Middle School and Northside Elementary in St. James.

Turnaround Arts is being led by the Perpich Center for Arts Education and the Minnesota State Arts Board. Minnesota is one of six new places across the nation selected for the program by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Arts and several private foundations. Schools in the program receive intensive arts education resources and expertise.

29 students tackle engineering challenge

Twenty-nine Eden Prairie High School students took part in the 26th Annual Minnesota Technology Engineering Education Association Supermileage Challenge.

Eden Prairie took second place in the electric class and third in the modified-engine class. The stock-class car made several attempts but was unable to finish a run. A “competition run” consists of starting with a preweighed amount of fuel, traveling 6 miles in under 24 minutes, then reweighing the fuel and converting the amount used into miles per gallon.

More than 60 schools from Minnesota and Wisconsin were in Brainerd to compete.
