Hennepin County is holding an "emergency meeting" this week on the growing spread of heroin use across the community.

The town hall forum, which is open to the public, will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 17 at North Hennepin Community College, 7411 85th Av. N., Brooklyn Park.

Speakers will be Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek, U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger, DEA special agent Jack Riley, Sen. Chris Eaton, Brooklyn Park Police Chief Craig Enevoldsen, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Kevin Benner, Dr. Joseph Lee of Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and Adam Pederson of Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge.

Heroin deaths in the Twin Cities have tripled since 2011, to 63 last year — most in Hennepin County. In fact, the county had a record 56 heroin overdose deaths in 2013.
