The Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary in Minneapolis will not open as scheduled on Tuesday, due to what officials said are hazardous trail conditions because of ice and snow.

The 15-acre garden in Theodore Wirth Park is home to over 500 plant species and 130 bird species, and contains woodland, wetland and prairie areas.

The late April and May season is peak time to view native woodland plants, such as bloodroot, wild ginger, trillium, bluebells and trout lilies. The area is also popular for birding year-round and features a 2/3-mile trail, visitor shelter, and displays and other information about natural history.

Garden and park maintenance staff hope to open the garden, trail and shelter by mid-April, weather permitting. For updates, visit www.minneapolisparks.org.
