A felon stopped his car briefly near a south Minneapolis intersection and his passenger fatally shot a man in a parked vehicle, leaving the victim to die in the arms of a friend, according to charges.

The driver, Shane M. McPike, 35, of Hopkins, was charged Friday in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm in the death of Adrian Carr, 35, of St. Louis Park.

The shooting happened shortly before 4 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the 3400 block of Snelling Avenue S.

The suspected gunman remains at large in what police say was not a random act of violence. Police declined to say what prompted the shooting.

McPike appeared in court Monday and remains jailed in lieu of $1 million bail.

According to the criminal complaint:

A call to 911 about shots being fired sent police officers to E. 34th Street and Snelling. The officers saw a man in the back seat of a car holding Carr's bleeding head.

The man told police that he and Carr had driven to the area to retrieve items from Carr's vehicle. Soon after arriving, they saw McPike drive by. Another man was with McPike.

Carr got in his vehicle and his friend heard gunshots. The friend said the shots came from a man sitting in the front passenger seat of McPike's car. He identified McPike as the driver.

McPike was arrested the next day. Police searched his car and recovered a handgun inside a sock. Shell casings at the scene were consistent with the caliber of that gun.

In 2006, McPike was convicted of a felony-level drug offense, making it illegal for him to possess a gun.
