City starts community book club next month

Starting in January, Wayzata residents can join a new communitywide book club.

The book club, "Wayzata Reads," will be reading "Lighthouse Road" by local author Peter Geye and will then meet in February to discuss the book. Book discussions will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Bookcase on Lake Street and at 1 p.m. Feb. 27 at Wayzata Library on Rice Street. An author presentation will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Wayzata City Hall meeting room on Rice Street.

The book club, which is a part of a growing trend in the nation of communitywide book clubs, is put on by the Wayzata Library, the Bookcase, the city of Wayzata and Wayzata Chamber of Commerce. More details are at www.hclib.org.

Plymouth

Registration is open for ski, snowboard club

Registration is now open for Plymouth's Teen Ski and Snowboard Club.

The club, which is geared for ninth- through 12th-graders, visits skiing and snowboarding venues from 1 to 10 p.m. each Sunday from Jan. 12 to Feb. 23.

Cost to register by Dec. 20 is $150. After Dec. 20, registration costs $160. The fee includes transportation and chaperon costs for the six trips. Lift tickets are not included in the fee and generally cost $20 each. Chamber's annual meeting is Jan. 10

The Bloomington Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting is Jan. 10 with keynote speaker Matt "Sweets" Jorgenson, founder of Sweets Kendamas.

The Bloomington-based company hand-paints, assembles and packages Sweets Kendama, a wooden skill toy that is popular around the world. Kendama is about never giving up, which parallels the attitude of Jorgenson and the company during their first years in business.

'Crazy About Winter Camp' is geared for kids

Kids in grades 1 to 4 will learn to use snowshoes, build an igloo and have other outdoor adventures at the Crazy About Winter Camp on Jan. 2 and 3 at Arneson Acres Park.

Winter and nature-themed activities will include making crafts, eating tasty snacks and playing indoor and outdoor games.

Nominations open for human rights award

Eden Prairie's Human Rights and Diversity Commission is accepting nominations for the city's annual Human Rights Awards until the end of February.

The awards, which recognize inspiring efforts that work to promote human rights and diversity, are given annually to one outstanding individual, youth, nonprofit organization and business. The deadline for nominations is 4:30 p.m. Feb. 28. Award recipients will be selected by the commission in March, with an award presentation and recognition at a City Council meeting later in the spring.

Crèche exhibit on display at St. Peter's Church

More than 200 Nativity scenes collected from around the world by the Rev. Jerry Dvorak, ­pastor at St. Peter's Catholic Church, will be displayed through Jan. 19 at the church at 6730 Nicollet Av. S.

The crèches, from Africa, Latin America, Mexico and Europe, are on display in the church's lower level. Hours are Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours on Christmas Eve are from noon to 10 p.m., Christmas Day from 8 a.m. to noon, Dec. 30 from noon to 5 p.m. and New Year's Day from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The exhibit will be closed on New Year's Eve.
