Event will help victims of domestic violence

The 11th annual "Be an Angel for Home Free Fundraiser" will take place this weekend to benefit programs that help victims of domestic violence.

The event will take place from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Holy Name Church, 155 County Road 24, Wayzata.

Home Free has served battered women and their children in the Plymouth area for more than 35 years. The event includes a spaghetti dinner and desserts, entertainment by magician Matt Dunn and silent and live auctions. The event is free and open to the public, though a freewill offering will be taken for dinner.

A personal care item or cleaning product for the residents of Home Free also will be welcomed at the door.

Edina

What's new at the city parks, senior center

The League of Women Voters Edina is sponsoring informational sessions on what's new with city parks and recreation and the senior center.

On Saturday, Nov. 9, Parks and Recreation Director Ann Kattreh will speak and answer questions about the city's parks, the Art Center, Braemar Arena, golf courses and other facilities from 9:45 to 11:30 a.m. at Edina City Hall.

On Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Edina Senior Center recreation supervisor Donna Tilsner will lead a tour of the center and explain current projects and programs. The session runs from 9:45 to 11:30 a.m.

People's Choice art awards announced

Kristen Piersa Kregel's "Number Seven," a life-size steel horse made from horseshoes, won first place in this year's People's Choice Awards of the Edina Public Art Sculpture Exhibit.

The horse, located at Grandview Square Park across from the Edina Senior Center, was voted top sculpture by people who viewed public art in the city. Kregel won $1,000.

Placing a close second was "Egghead," a bronze Humpty Dumpty reading a book, by Kimber Fiebiger of Minneapolis, who won $750.

Third place and $500 went to "Leap Frog," a bronze life-size sculpture by Art Norby of New London, Minn., featuring two young boys playing the familiar childhood game.

The program is run by the Edina Public Art Committee, which is part of the Edina Arts and Culture Commission.

MAPLE GROVE

Burglary spree prompts police alert

Maple Grove issued an alert last week after three home burglaries of jewelry that have happened in the last two months.

The burglaries all occurred in the area of Fieldstone Boulevard N. and Shadyview Lane N. after a suspect or suspects forced open a rear sliding glass or patio door and stole jewelry.

Police are asking residents to report any suspicious activity, vehicles or individuals.

Bloomington

Commission seeks a new member

The city is seeking applicants to fill a two-year position on the Human Rights Commission, which advises the City Council on human rights and diversity issues.

The successful applicant must live in Bloomington. He or she will be appointed by the council.

The commission meets on the third Monday of each month. Examples of previous activities include Diversity Day with Bloomington Public Schools, the International Day of Peace and Black History Month.

City will hosts arts fair next weekend

Plymouth will hold a two-day arts fair next weekend.

The fair takes place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 16 and noon-5 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Plymouth Creek Center, 14800 34th Av. N.

It includes demonstrations and art sales as well as entertainment, children's activities and musical performances.

The event is free and open to the public and co-sponsored by the city, Plymouth Arts Council, Envy Skin Clinic and Andersen Windows.

IOCP holds 'Sleep Out' fundraising campaign

The Interfaith Outreach & Community Partners, or IOCP, will hold a fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 9.

The annual "Sleep Out Campaign" includes a prayer walk, community block party and poverty simulation.

The campaign, which will take place Nov. 9-Dec. 31, kicks off with the event at 1605 County Road 101 N. in Plymouth.

The goal is to raise more than $2 million to help the 1,777 struggling families in the community.

Navarre seeks bikers' input for trail study

The Navarre Community Initiative is hosting a meeting this month to gather input on the area's bike trails.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Gray Freshwater Institute, 2500 Shadywood Road, Orono.

Navarre, which is part of the Orono, is next to the Dakota Trail and a popular place for bikers around Lake Minnetonka.

The meeting comes as Hennepin County and Three Rivers Park District are revising their countywide bike and regional trail plan.

MINNETONKA

MAM hosts 40th year gala celebration

The Music Association of Minnetonka will celebrate its 40th year with a gala event Friday, Nov. 8.

Williston Center plans fitness day for vets

Veterans, military personnel, spouses and kids ages 7-12 are invited to attend a free tennis clinic and play day on Sunday, Nov. 10.

The event, part of a "Thank You to Military/Veterans Play Day," will take place from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Williston Fitness Center, 14509 Minnetonka Drive in Minnetonka. The event is a way to show appreciation for residents' military service.

Police host crime prevention meeting

The Robbinsdale Police Department will host a crime prevention meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Robbinsdale Police Department.

Police will share details about who was targeted by criminals last summer and steps residents can take to reduce the risk of being a victim.

Barns of Carver County 2014 calendar is on sale

The 2014 Barns of Carver County calendar is now available, featuring 12 barn photos by Waconia photographer and artist Ruth Tremblay.

This year is the sixth year that the calendar has been published, and Tremblay includes historical text about the barns and the farm families who own them.

The calendars can be purchased for $15 at Klein Bank locations in Carver County and St. Bonifacius, Mackenthun's Fine Foods in Waconia, Watertown Pharmacy, Mayer Lumber Company in Mayer, At The Farm Organic Farmers Market, Frost & Steam Coffee House and Ice Cream Parlor, Diva Dog, Premiere Apparel, Who's on First? and Heart & Home Boutique, all of Waconia, and the Chaska Historical Society.

This year a "Barns of Carver County" self-guided 44-barn tour kit also is available. The tour allows you to view the barns at your own pace. It is available for $25 at ­Mackenthun's Fine Foods in Waconia and the Watertown Pharmacy.
