A Monticello man was charged with eight felony counts on Wednesday — two days after crashing his SUV into a car and critically injuring a father and his 1-year-old son while fleeing police after a robbery, court papers say.

Kevin P. Green, 47, was driving with a blood alcohol concentration higher than the legal limit, and he also admitted to snorting cocaine on the day that he crashed into a car, injuring driver Travis C. Kolles and son Layton C. Kolles of Monticello, according to criminal complaint filed Wednesday in district courts in Wright and Sherburne counties.

Among the charges he faces: aggravated robbery, fleeing police and vehicular homicide or operation.

The father and son have traumatic brain injuries, and Travis Kolles also has broken ribs and a collapsed lung. They remained in critical condition at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale on Wednesday.

The complaints allege that:

In Monticello, a deputy was alerted that a robbery had just taken place at Tootsie's Tavern in nearby Big Lake. The suspect, who intimated he had a gun, was a black male in a bright yellow construction vest driving a Chevrolet Suburban.

The deputy spotted two Big Lake police cars pursuing the SUV. The deputy turned on his emergency lights and siren, then joined in the pursuit.

The suspect turned onto Ramsey Street and drove onto two residential yards before continuing on Broadway Avenue in the wrong direction, heading east in the westbound lanes of travel. He sped toward County Road 18, still traveling in the wrong lane.

At the intersection of Hwy. 25 and 18, Green allegedly blew through a red light and crashed into the Honda Accord that Kolles was driving south on County Road 18.

The impact sent both cars rolling over. Officers converged on the smashed SUV, grabbing Green, who was not seriously injured.

It was apparent to officers that Travis and Layton Kolles had life-threatening injuries. Layton was strapped into a car seat in the rear of the Honda.

Wednesday, District Judge Kathleen Mottl set bail at $600,000 without conditions or $300,000 with electric home monitoring, at Green's expense.

Also known as Kevin Greene, the Monticello man has prior convictions for terroristic threats and driving without a valid license.
