Medina Mayor Tom Crosby resigned last week because of health reasons. He has led the city of about 5,000 since 2007, and last fall was re-elected with 66 percent of the vote.

Medina's City Council appointed one of its members, Liz Weir, to succeed Crosby, and to serve the remainder of his two-year term.

Crosby told friends last month that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and was beginning chemotherapy treatments. He also said that he wanted to continue as mayor as long as his health allowed it.

City Administrator Scott Johnson called Crosby an "incredible leader"with great ethics and integrity who will be sorely missed.

Crosby has a long record of public service in Medina and in the Twin Cities, and is still active as an attorney after retiring from the Faegre Baker Daniels law firm.

Medina's City Council also appointed Kathleen Martin, a city planning commission member, to take Weir's place on the council pending a special election in 2014.
