RICHFIELD

City examines rules on recreational vehicles

The Richfield City Council is hosting two open houses to discuss possible changes to the city's recreational vehicle ordinance. The first is from 6 to 9 p.m. today and the second is 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Both are at Richfield City Hall, 6700 Portland Av.

While city officials say no specific changes are being considered, many boats, trailers and motor homes are parked in yards or driveways around the city. Council members and city employees want to hear what residents think about the issue. Examples of ordinances from neighboring cities will be available for reference.

MINNETONKA

Hazardous waste drop

Hazardous waste will be collected by Hennepin County Thursday through Saturday at the Minnetonka Public Works Department, 11522 Minnetonka Blvd. Only household waste will be accepted.

Those items include lights with mercury in them, thermostats and thermometers, pesticides, electronics like VCRs and computers, automotive wastes, paints, solvents and thinners, rechargeable tools and batteries. For more information, call 612-348-3777 or go to www.hennepin.us/collection events.

PLYMOUTH

Library will soon close for reconstruction

Plymouth library patrons will have to go elsewhere for their books beginning May 31, when the library will close for construction.

The reopening is slated for 2010, the city's website states.

In the meantime, customers will be able to visit the Maple Grove, Ridgedale and Wayzata locations. The Wayzata branch will be open an additional night to help handle the crossover. For the libraries' locations and directions, go to www.startribune.com/a3237.

The Plymouth City Council approved the site plan for the new 30,000-square-foot library on April 22. It will be built on the same site as the existing 16,000-square-foot library, at 15700 36th Av. N.

Still time to enter banner design contest

The deadline for Plymouth's public art banner contest has been extended to 4 p.m. May 30.

Each year, the Plymouth Fine Arts Council and the City of Plymouth accept designs for vertical, 2-by-4-foot banners. The winning designs will be displayed on city streets. Artists age 18 years and older are eligible.

For contest details, visit www.plymouthartscouncil.org or call 763-509-5200.

WAYZATA

Honoring history

The Wayzata Heritage Preservation Board is planning several events for National Heritage Preservation Month.

A trolley tour of west Wayzata historic sites is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Thursday, and a trolley tour of east Wayzata historic sites is set for a week later, from 6-8 p.m. May 22. Seating is limited. Sign up for the tours at City Hall, 600 Rice St. Both tours will begin and end at City Hall.

The "Mayor's Best Restoration Award" will be presented at 7 p.m. on May 27 during a City Council meeting at City Hall.

The city also has recognized four buildings with "Centennial House Awards": The Rosekrans House at 425 Arlington Circle; the house at 161 Huntington Av. S.; the house at 244 E. Wayzata Blvd.; and Wayzata State Bank at 306 E. Lake St.
