Baby left at free day care died of natural causes
A 4-month-old girl who died after being left at a day care in a Hennepin County social services building in downtown Minneapolis in March died of natural causes, county officials said.
Yesenia Ayala of Minneapolis died of bronchopneumonia, said Dr. Andrew Baker, the county medical examiner.
Baker added this afternoon that he sees no way that the baby's death could have been prevented. Bronchopneumonia is an acute inflammation of the walls of the smaller bronchial tubes.
On March 10, emergency personnel were called to the Century Plaza building in the 300 block of S. 12th Street shortly before 3:30 p.m. on a report of a baby in "medical distress." Yesenia died soon after at the Hennepin County Medical Center.
Yesenia was left at the Sunshine Time Drop-In Center, a privately operated facility that contracts with the county to provide the free service for social services clients.
The girl was left at the free day care by her parents while they sought assistance from the Human Services and Public Health Department, said department area director Bill Brumfield.
