A 17-year-old Richfield teen was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for his involvement in the fatal beating of a 50-year-old homeless man in north Minneapolis this past summer.

Andre Zedrick Steward Jr. was sentenced Monday after he pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder in connection with the death of Harry Lee Brown.

Steward had been with 23-year-old Willis Esposito Richardson on the night of June 29, looking for somebody to rob when they spotted Brown about 9 p.m., walking along 18th Street N., near Bryant Avenue, Steward said in court last month.

Steward told police Richardson hit Brown with a baseball bat, and Steward punched him in the face. Brown fell and hit his head on the sidewalk.

Steward told police he went into Brown's pockets and took $5 that Steward said he needed "to have a good time." Brown died more than a week later after he was removed from life support.
