Watershed district to give $100K in grants

This month, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District is accepting applications for the Cynthia Krieg Watershed Stewardship Fund, a $100,000 grant fund for local communities, schools, civic groups, non-profit groups and others to pay for projects that provide, protect or promote clean water. Proposals are due Sept. 26.

Projects have to be within the watershed district and either improve public awareness of clean water issues or use new innovative ways of managing water quality. Projects are limited to $25,000 in grant funds.

PLYMOUTH

Fire department hosts 5K walk/run

The Plymouth Fire Department will host its eighth annual 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run this month.

Proceeds from the race on Sept. 29 will benefit the Plymouth Firefighters Relief Association. Race day registration and check-in starts at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 29, with the race beginning at 9 a.m. and the Kids Fun Run starting at 10 a.m.

The race will begin at Plymouth Fire Station II, 12000 Old Rockford Road, going 3.1 miles through adjacent neighborhoods. Cost to register is $20 before Sept. 14 and $25 after Sept. 14; those who register before Sept. 27 are eligible for door prizes.

Participants receive a long sleeve T-shirt, and the top three men and women finishers will get awards. Kids will also receive a gift when they finish the Kids Fun Run.

Live music included at farmers market

Thursday's Farmers market in Maple Grove will include a free performance by the local Percolators band.

How to 'haze' coyotes to prevent problems

The Edina Police Department is sponsoring sessions on "hazing" coyotes to discourage them from hanging around homes and near pets.

Sessions will be held in the council chambers of Edina City Hall at 4801 W. 50th St. from 7-9 p.m. tonight and from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday and Sept. 15 and 22.

City officials say hazing has lowered the presence of coyotes in other metropolitan areas. Presentations are free, but registration is recommended.

Run/walk for Lupus planned Saturday

The Lupus Walk for Hope and 5K Run will be held Saturday at French Regional Park in Plymouth.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the Walk/5K Run start at 10:30.

Yellow Ribbon kickoff meeting

The Southwest Twin Cities Yellow Ribbon Coalition will hold its kickoff meeting Tuesday at the Hopkins VFW, 100 Shady Oak Road.

The coalition, which includes the cities of Edina, Excelsior, Hopkins, Minnetonka, St. Louis Park and Wayzata, is part of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, which provides community support for people who serve in the military, veterans and their families.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. and will feature a 9/11 commemoration followed by presentations by retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Dennis Schulstad and state Director of Military Outreach Annette Kuyper.

MINNEAPOLIS

Bike library tour

Families are invited on a bike tour of three Hennepin County Libraries in Minneapolis on Saturday.

The tour begins at 2 p.m. at the historic Linden Hills library at 2900 W. 43rd St., continues to the Washburn library at 5244 Lyndale Av. S., and ends at the Nokomis library at 5100 34th Av. S.

Participants will bike about 7 miles, and mechanical support will be provided by Freewheel Bike. Registration is required, and space is limited. Participants must complete a waiver form, and helmets and water bottles are recommended.
