Hennepin County, which is looking for more guardians ad litem, is hosting an event Wednesday evening at Babalu.
THE LATEST: The 2,500 abused and neglected children who flow through the Hennepin County District Court system need more help, especially from people of color.
The county is recruiting volunteers to serve as guardians ad litem for the children who end up in the courts through no fault of their own.
WANT TO LEARN MORE? The county is hosting an informational session from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Babalu Restaurant, 801 Washington Av. N. in Minneapolis.
QUALIFICATIONS: The event is open to "concerned citizens who have experience with children (parenting, volunteer or professional experience assisting youth), common sense and a desire to help children," a county press release says.
IN THE RANKS: The county has 250 trained volunteers. Less than 10 percent are black, although black children represent 37 percent of youth needing advocates. Those who attend will view presentations, meet current guardians and receive information about how to volunteer.
CONTACT: Those who want more information can contact Michelle Johnson, guardian ad litem coordinator, at 612-596-7403 or at Michelle.Johnson@courts.state.mn.us.
