A woman was run over by a van and killed early Thursday in Maple Grove, and authorities needed nearly half a day to determine who she was.

The woman was struck about 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Main Street and Weaver Lake Road and was dead at the scene, according to police, who estimated her age initially at 35 to 40.

The man driving the van remained at the scene and called police, Capt. Keith Terlinden said.

"There was nothing at the scene" such as a purse or cellphone to help police identify the victim, Terlinden said. Shortly after 1 p.m., police said they knew her identity but were not disclosing it until relatives were notified.

Alcohol use by the driver does not appear to be a factor, the captain said. Toxicology tests were pending on whether the victim had been drinking, he added.
