Boaters will be banned from an area of two Lake Minnetonka bays during a first-of-its kind July 4th aerobatic event this week.

South Lake-Excelsior Chamber of Commerce's Lake Minnetonka 4th of July Celebration includes a new aerobatic show at 8 p.m. over Gideons and Excelsior bays.

As a result, all swimmers and watercraft will be prohibited from the area during the show and 30 minutes before it starts. Recreational and charter boats also will be banned from the area during the show and about 40 minutes before.

The flyover area, approved by law enforcement, is 4,000 feet long and 650 feet wide. Boats will mark the perimeter with flashing lights.

Local professional pilot Michael Wiskus, a national aerobatic champion, will do the 15-minute show in a single-engine Pitts biplane, performing rolls, spirals, stalls and other aerobatics. If weather cancels the event, it will take place July 5.

A Minnesota Orchestra performance and fireworks will follow the show.
