Carver County commissioners rejected a request last week to increase boat inspections at Lake Bavaria in Chaska. Lakeshore residents had asked for the changes to prevent the spread of zebra mussels.
The county is co-funding a daily dawn-to-dusk inspection program at Lake Minnewashta Regional Park in Chanhassen. Lake Bavaria homeowners wanted a similar arrangement, in which boaters would need to have their vessels inspected at Lake Minnewashta before they could launch on Lake Bavaria.
Inspectors check for mussels that can be attached to boats and trailers, or in their bilge water or attached aquatic weeds.
County park officials said that the Lake Minnewashta program is a one-year pilot and needs to be evaluated before the county decides whether to expand inspections elsewhere. On a 3-2 vote, commissioners agreed.
Lake Bavaria currently has an inspector checking boats for a few hours each weekend on either Saturday or Sunday.
