YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
The dogs will be evaluated by Humane Society next week and could be put up for adoption later.
More than 100 dogs that were running amok on a property in Bemidji, Minn., earlier this week are now housed at the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley, where they'll be evaluated and put up for adoption.
Dozens of Chihuahua, pug, dachshund and spaniel mixed breeds were removed Thursday from two Bemidji mobile homes that were condemned.
Police had been monitoring the situation over the years, as the number of dogs slowly grew due to inbreeding, said Kathie Johnson, director of animal care services for the society.
"It just gets out of control," she said. "There's no way you can properly manage 107 dogs."
Johnson said the two women who owned the animals "truly loved" them. There was no evidence of cruelty or neglect. "They weren't trying to be cruel," she said. "In their eyes, they were taking care of them the best that they could."
During a welfare check Wednesday, one of the owners agreed to release 48 dogs, on the condition that she would keep 16, said Wade Hanson, who works for the Humane Society.
The police returned Thursday to collect the dogs with a search warrant in case the woman changed her mind, he said. They found the two houses on the property in a state of "disaster," with urine-soaked furniture, holes in the floor and feces everywhere.
"It was literally packed down to look like a carpet," Hanson said.
The remaining 59 dogs and two cats were then seized and brought to the Animal Humane Society.
Johnson said the society receives about five to 10 such cases each year.
The surrendered animals will be medically evaluated next week. Johnson said she hopes they will be available for adoption soon afterward.
But she cautioned that these dogs will need more patience than others because they haven't been trained. "There is going to be a little extra work and extra TLC that's needed," she said.
