Patrons of the Menards store at 7701 Nicollet Ave. in Richfield have gotten used to the fact that the cramped 1960 building doesn't have room to carry all of the merchandise that big-box Menards stores sell.
Change may be coming. Last week, the Richfield City Council approved a conditional use permit that would lead to Menards demolishing its current store and the vacant Jun Bo restaurant next door. Filling the space would be a new two-story building with a garden center and warehouse covering more than 300,000 square feet, plus a lumber yard and a parking lot for 318 vehicles.
Council members turned away objections from the operators of an adjacent Burger King, who claimed the new Menards would devalue the property by making it less visible to customers and changing traffic patterns.
There's no word yet on whether the new Menards will feature the player pianos that serenade customers as they shop for plumbing fixtures and birdseed at some new stores.
