A woman who suffered a traumatic brain injury at the hands of her former boyfriend told authorities a chilling tale of domestic abuse and captivity by her current boyfriend after she was able to escape his clutches last week, according to court documents.

The 25-year-old woman, identified in a complaint by the initials C.M.A., told an emergency room doctor at Regions Hospital in St. paul on Thursday that her boyfriend, "Twon," had burned her stomach with a hot iron after she had ironed his clothes incorrectly, the documents said. She also told the doctor that her boyfriend had not let her leave her house for six months and let her talk to only one other person, his 3-year-old niece.

Jullius Antwon Coleman, 33, was charged Tuesday in Ramsey County District Court with two counts of second-degree assault, one of third-degree assault and one of criminal abuse of a vulnerable adult.

Coleman spent time in prison for check forgery and possession of crack cocaine, according to the state Department of Corrections.

According to the criminal complaint, Coleman apparently met the woman's previous boyfriend in prison. That boyfriend had caused her brain injury by "bashing her head into a car door multiple times," the complaint said.

The woman told doctors she had been "given to" Coleman by the previous boyfriend and that he had not allowed her to leave the house for six months and that when he left, he took her shoes and jacket and locked her in a bedroom.

The woman told the doctor that the burns on her stomach were so bad that Coleman took her to a pharmacy on Jan. 28, three days afterward. Coleman stayed in the car because of his outstanding warrants. Once she was inside the store, she screamed and called for help, she said.

On Saturday, Coleman's aunt told police that she has tried to persuade the woman to go to a shelter "because she has seen how controlling Coleman is over C.M.A.," the complaint said.
