One teenager was dead and another was in custody Saturday after an overnight stabbing that police believe was triggered by jealous rage.

Police say Darius Derrick Maxwell, 17, of St. Paul, died of stab wounds after the 12:07 a.m. attack at his girlfriend's house in the 700 block of E. Maryland Avenue. A 19-year-old man taken into custody on suspicion of murder could be charged as soon as Monday, police said.

Police were called to the address on a report that the suspect was trying to break into his ex-girlfriend's home. Officers came upon the mortally wounded Maxwell near the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Weide Street. He was taken by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where he died a short time later, police said.

The suspect was arrested at the ex-girlfriend's home. Investigators believe he broke in, accused Maxwell of being the female resident's boyfriend and stabbed him. Maxwell fled outdoors, where officers found him. No one else was hurt.

The suspect formerly had been in a relationship with the young woman, who in December 2009 obtained an order for protection ordering him to stay away from her, police said.

On Saturday afternoon, no one was home at the address along the busy thoroughfare on the city's northeast side, where crime scene tape hung from a chain link fence in the back yard. Half a block down at the corner of Maryland and Weide, blue latex gloves littered the corner where Maxwell collapsed.

Neighbors said they hadn't heard any disturbance at the home and didn't realize that the paramedics they saw at the corner were trying to save a teenager's life.

"This is sad. I knew something bad had happened, but not this," said Kirk Wolhart, who lives two houses down. He said that while a few neighbors look out for one another, most keep to themselves.

According to the suspect's MySpace.com and Facebook pages, he has a young son with a 17-year-old girl from St. Paul. Both the suspect's and the girl's names are on the mailbox at the Maryland Avenue house. Photos on the sites show the suspect and his then-girlfriend posing during her pregnancy; later he is shown holding the newborn while smiling broadly. The girl also has a MySpace.com page. She last logged in Saturday. On her profile, she describes the father of her child as "out of his shell all of a sudden, but ... let's not get into further details."

The suspect wrote on his Facebook page that he attended St. Paul College but plans to return to his native Louisiana. Friends remind him that he has a child in Minnesota. "I know," he writes in response. On Jan. 26, he writes: "The World is about to end leave your past and look at the future!!"

The suspect remains in the Ramsey County jail.
