A 34-year-old repeat felon has been indicted on charges that he threw a sawed-off shotgun from a vehicle in St. Paul as he tried to flee police.
Shawn M. Kyllander of Willernie was charged Wednesday in federal court with one count of a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of possession of an unregistered firearm.
According to the indictment:
On Oct. 1, Kyllander was pulled over in St. Paul. As officers approached his car, however, he sped away. Kyllander crashed into a ditch and attempted to run away, but was caught quickly.
Officers saw Kyllander throw something, which turned out to be a shotgun, from his car window moments before the crash.
The gun's barrel was less than 18 inches long, making it a sawed-off shotgun, which is illegal under federal law unless registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
Kyllander's felony record includes convictions in Dakota and Ramsey counties for theft of a motor vehicle (1994), third-degree possession of a controlled substance (1999) and being a felon in possession of a firearm (2004).
