Matt Bostrom, a St. Paul assistant police chief who helped oversee security planning for the 2008 Republican National Convention, is likely to embark on a run for Ramsey County sheriff.
On Tuesday, he announced the formation of the Bostrom for Sheriff Committee, and is expected to begin raising funds soon for a bid to unseat the incumbent, Bob Fletcher.
Co-chairs for the campaign committee include U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn.; state Sen. Mee Moua; Police Chief John Harrington and Ramsey County Commissioners Victoria Reinhardt and Tony Bennett.
"This is an exciting first step in this campaign," Bostrom said in a news release. "I am confident that my commitment to professional public service and to the core values of protecting our citizens, partnering with the community, reducing neighborhood crime, practicing fiscal responsibility and collaborating with other law enforcement agencies are what the citizens expect from the sheriff."
Fletcher, first elected in 1994, eked out a victory over former St. Paul Police Chief Bill Finney in 2006. For next year's race, he has been endorsed by Teamsters DRIVE.
