Sarah Caruso, president of the Minnesota Children's Museum, will become CEO and president of the Greater Twin Cities United Way, officials said Thursday.
She will replace Lauren Segal, who became head of the St. Paul United Way in 1994 and of the combined St. Paul and Minneapolis agencies in 2004. She announced her departure in February.
Caruso, chosen after a national search, takes over Nov. 30 but will continue leading the museum until an interim leader is chosen.
A St. Paul native, Caruso worked as a banker in New York after graduating from Smith College. She joined General Mills in 1986 and headed its Foodservice Division new business development, then left to start a consulting company in 1999.
During her tenure, the Children's Museum achieved record attendance and membership. In December, she was appointed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty to chair the Council on Early Care and Education. She serves on the boards of several nonprofit agencies.
The United Way last month launched its 2009 campaign, seeking to raise $88.9 million to help fund housing, education and other social services.
