Last update: July 6, 2009 - 10:10 PM

A 14-year-old boy was recovering at Regions Hospital in St. Paul on Monday from injuries suffered when a rocket-type firework hit him in the chest on July 4th, according to St. Paul police.

The incident happened about 9:45 p.m. Saturday on the 400 block of Van Buren Avenue, in St. Paul's Frogtown neighborhood.

Police said the firework, which is illegal in Minnesota, was bought in Wisconsin. It wasn't clear how it went off, but it caused burns and required surgery, police said.
