Iron Range church keeps faith for missing St. Thomas student

Last update: April 12, 2009 - 11:17 PM

EVELETH, MINN. - On Easters past, Dan Zamlen loved to serve mass at Resurrection Catholic Church in this Iron Range town.

But Sunday, church members gathered to say prayers for Zamlen, who has been missing for more than a week. The University of St. Thomas freshman was walking along the Mississippi River bluffs in St. Paul when he disappeared in the early morning hours of April 5.

Since then, many family members and friends have traveled from the Iron Range to the Twin Cities to help in the search for the 19-year-old who used to carry incense at Easter vigil and teach religious education classes.

The community gathered on Friday night to pray for his safe return. The Rev. Charles Flynn said Zamlen's mother, Sally, told him the search is "not anywhere near over."

In St. Paul, volunteers continued to search Sunday in the area where he is thought to have disappeared.
