St. Paul police are investigating the suspicious death of a woman in a house on the city's East Side, they said Wednesday night.

Officers called to the residence in the 2300 block of Nokomis Avenue at 4:15 p.m. found an "unresponsive" woman, police said at a late-night news conference in St. Paul. Paramedics were called and pronounced her dead at the scene, which is near Beaver Lake, in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Ernster said forensic investigators are working to determine what happened. He said he did not know if she lived in the house, and he had no further information about the cause of her death or whether a weapon was involved. "It's so early on in the investigation," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 651-266-5650.

The Ramsey County medical examiner will conduct an autopsy and determine the exact cause and manner of death.
