A 22-year-old African lion at the Como Zoo was euthanized after suffering health problems in her advanced age, a zoo spokesman said Wednesday.

Wynona, the second-oldest female lion in captivity in North America, died Tuesday, spokesman Matt Reinartz said.

Wynona was born Oct. 6, 1992, at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha and arrived at the Como Zoo about six months later.

She gave birth to 12 kittens in her lifetime, Reinartz said. Two of them, Mufasa, a 13-year-old male, and Savannah, a 15-year-old female, are the zoo's remaining lions.

Lions in captivity typically live into their late teens or early 20s, according to the National Zoo.
