A 30-year-old man posing as a cop shot a childhood friend on the patio of a popular sports bar in downtown St. Paul because his victim refused to join him in robbing drug dealers, according to charges filed Monday.

Patrick T. Juetten, of Woodbury, was charged with attempted second-degree murder in the shooting about 11:30 p.m. Friday at Tom Reid's Hockey City Pub on W. 7th Street as thousands of people had just attended the neighboring boys state high school hockey tournaments at the nearby Xcel Energy Center.

The victim, whose identity has yet to be released, was shot once at close range, the criminal complaint read. The .40-caliber bullet pierced his lung, broke a rib and entered his liver. The complaint described the liver injury as "extremely serious."

From Regions Hospital, the victim told police that he and Juetten played hockey together and attended the same high school, the complaint continued. He said Juetten "called him out of the blue," and they met at Tom Reid's.

Juetten showed up wearing a fake police badge on a lanyard and carrying a handgun, the complaint cited the victim as saying, adding that the defendant liked to pose as an officer. Juetten told him he was a "detective and he just got off of work," the complaint read.

Juetten said he wanted "to rob drug dealers," the complaint read. The victim used a vulgarity to decline Juetten's pressure to join him, and that's when Juetten shot the man in the chest, the court document continued.

Police located Juetten in Woodbury the next day. Under questioning, he denied being the shooter. He said he gave his keys to a stranger at the bar so that person could get some cigarettes out of the vehicle, the complaint read.

Juetten said the stranger returned with the handgun and shot the victim, the complaint continued.

It was at that moment that Juetten fled the bar, the court document added, and he does not know the location of the gun.
