One man was dead and another hospitalized Saturday after a fight at a St. Paul bar.

Police were called to the Moonshine Saloon, at E. 7th Street and Duluth Street in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood, shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday. They found the two injured men outside the bar and 25 to 30 people running from the scene.

The Ramsey County medical examiner identified the man as Cher Vang, 28, of St. Paul. The office didn't say immediately how he died.Bar manager Dave Heu said Saturday afternoon that he thought the fight started inside the bar shortly before closing time.

"I think it was just a misunderstanding in the bar," Heu said.

Security personnel escorted the quarreling group outside, Heu said. As people began to leave for the night, Heu was told that there was fighting outside. When he went to see what was going on, he saw people arguing and a man lying on the ground. Someone told him that the man had been stabbed, so Heu called police, he said.

"It happened so fast, I didn't realize who was who and what was what," he said.

The two men were taken to Regions Hospital, where Vang was pronounced dead. The second victim remained hospitalized Saturday with noncritical injuries. No arrests had been made as of late Saturday.

Sgt. Paul Paulos urged witnesses to come forward. "Somebody there saw something," he said Saturday. "We have very little [information]."

The bar planned to be open during its regular hours Saturday night, Heu said. While three to four security guards are normally on duty, bar managers are thinking about adding more security on a permanent basis, he said. Bar security personnel use a metal-detecting wand on customers and sometimes do pat-downs, Heu said.

The homicide remains under investigation. Anyone with information should call the St. Paul police homicide unit at 651-266-5650.
