Two 17-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy were charged Tuesday in Ramsey County juvenile court in connection with the shooting Saturday of two teenagers on St. Paul's West Side. Prosecutors are seeking to have all three certified to stand trial as an adult.
Danny Urzua Perez and Victor Yarser Artola, both 17, of Richfield, and a 14-year-old who was not named because of his age were charged with drive-by shooting and committing a crime to benefit a gang.
A 14-year-old boy who was shot in the back is still hospitalized at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. A 17-year-old boy who was hit in the leg was treated and released.
The shootings happened about 6:40 p.m. Saturday at Mount Hope Avenue and Baker Street after an altercation between two gangs. Authorities said they don't believe the confrontation was related to the Cinco de Mayo celebration nearby.
Husband is charged with attempted murder
A 73-year-old man who recently moved to St. Paul from San Diego has been charged with attempted murder and assault for allegedly stabbing his 36-year-old wife at their East Side home.
The criminal complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court said the victim told police that her husband, Gnia Chao Thao, attacked her Sunday "without saying anything." She suffered a stab wound to the chest and a large cut on her left hand and underwent surgery at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
Family members took the knife from Thao and hid it from him, the complaint said.
The woman told police her husband also had stabbed her March 23 in California. At that time, the woman said, her husband was evaluated for possible mental illness and was prescribed medication. Thao then moved to St. Paul, where he could be monitored by his son. The victim moved to St. Paul when she was released from the hospital in San Diego.
St. Paul stabbing prompts assault chargeA 30-year-old St. Paul woman was charged with first-degree assault after she allegedly stabbed her boyfriend in the chest Sunday at a home in the 800 block of Sherburne Avenue.
"I killed him, I killed him, didn't I?" Corinna J. Hernandez asked police, according to the criminal complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court. "Can I have a cigarette before I go to prison for life?"
The victim, identified in the complaint by his initials, T.J.W., underwent surgery at Regions Hospital in St. Paul and is expected to survive.
The complaint said a witness told police that the couple argued about another woman after they returned from a Super-America store Sunday evening. The witness heard a scream and ran into the house to see the victim clutching his chest.
Hernandez was arrested at a friend's home. She initially told police she "doesn't even own a knife," the complaint said. She later told police that the victim had fallen on the knife.
