A St. Paul man admitted Tuesday that he was driving drunk before his 5-year-old son got out of the vehicle and was found Jan. 3 wandering alone looking for help.

Christian Damon Derek Stoner, 40, who police found sitting in his Jeep, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 days in the Ramsey County workhouse and ordered to have a chemical dependency evaluation.

Charges say Stoner picked up the boy and his 1-year-old sister at day care, and eventually parked on a street in St. Paul's Macalester-Groveland area. The boy said he went for help because his father was refusing to take the boy and his sister home. A preliminary breath test put Stoner's blood alcohol level at 0.289 percent, more than three times the legal limit for driving.

On Tuesday, Stoner pleaded guilty to third-degree driving while impaired.

An 84-year-old Lakeville man has died from injuries suffered in a fire at his home, authorities said Tuesday. Arthur R. Jones died Sunday afternoon at Hennepin County Medical Center, according to the county medical examiner's office. His death came one day after his birthday. Jones was found in his home in the 18600 block of Kalmar Trail on March 4 after a small fire was reported, the examiner's office said. A neighbor had not seen him for a few days and went to check on him, Lakeville Police Chief Tom Vonhof said. The neighbor found Jones on the kitchen floor with some burns on his legs and evidence of a small extinguished fire in the kitchen. No foul play is suspected. Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. Paul Walsh
