Similar cases end in payouts

Last update: November 1, 2007 - 8:53 PM

In recent months at least two families have collected after filing federal lawsuits contending that Minnesota jail inmates died after receiving inadequate medical care.

September 2007: Mille Lacs County agreed to pay $700,000 to settle a lawsuit contending that jail employees rebuffed pleas for medical care from Brandon Brown, 18. He was jailed on an unrelated warrant after suffering head injuries in a car accident and later died of complications from the injury.

March 2007: A federal jury awarded $530,000 to the family of Walter V. Gordon, 43, who died of heart failure while serving a five-day sentence in the Washington County jail in 2004.
