A Bloomington police officer is recovering after being hit in the head during a domestic assault call.
A Bloomington police officer injured while arresting a man suspected of domestic assault later was taken to the hospital with a concussion.
Officer Kevin Olson is now recovering at home and is expected to be back at work at the end of the week, said Bloomington police Cmdr. Mark Stehlik.
The man arrested when Olson was hurt was charged Tuesday in Hennepin County District Court with three felony counts of assault as well as a misdemeanor count of domestic assault.
Ryan Jay McCuen, 26, of Minneapolis, is charged with one count of third-degree assault and a count of fourth-degree assault over Olson's injuries. He also is charged with fourth-degree assault for spitting blood on another officer. McCuen, in the Hennepin County jail in lieu of $30,000 bail, is due in court Wednesday afternoon, according to jail records.
About 2 p.m. Sunday, Bloomington police were called to a house on the 800 block of W. 86th Street. A woman there said McCuen, her fiancé and the father of her 6-year-old daughter, dragged her through the house before throwing her out without a coat or shoes, according to the criminal complaint.
Officers found McCuen on a bed under some blankets, handcuffed him and tried to take him out to a squad car, the complaint said. As officers were trying to put him in the car, McCuen "snapped his head back real quick," striking Olson in the chin or jaw area, Stehlik said. Olson also suffered a small cut inside his lip and a wrist injury. He was treated at Fairview Southdale Hospital and told not to work for two days.
But later Olson was off to another hospital in an ambulance, showing signs of a head injury. "It was one of those deals where it came on a little bit delayed," Stehlik said.
Stehlik, who handles all cases where Bloomington police are hurt, said it was the first concussion suffered on the job this year.
