SCOTT COUNTY

H1N1 flu clinics continue in schools

Scott County's Public Health Department gave nearly 1,500 school-based vaccinations for H1N1 flu Nov. 17-23, officials say.

The shots for ages 9 and under were given in elementary buildings.

Phase one included:

• Jordan (two buildings, including St. John the Baptist): 400 immunizations.

• New Prague (five buildings, including St. Wenceslaus and Holy Cross): 743.

• Belle Plaine (four buildings, including Our Lady of the Prairie and Trinity Lutheran): 336.

In other formats, another 3,500 doses of vaccine have been administered or distributed, the county says. Officials will continue giving the shots in elementary schools in the rest of the county, then return later with second doses.

"Our goal is to complete the elementary schools in Scott County sometime between the 16th and 23rd of December," said Jennifer Deschaine, public health director. "This, of course, is all dependent on vaccine availability. We will then proceed to the middle and junior high schools, then the high schools."

Priority groups for the vaccine include ages 6 months through 24 years old, those 25 to 64 with certain chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, health-care providers and people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months.

The county will hold a community-based clinic this month for uninsured people and others in priority groups who cannot get the vaccine elsewhere, officials said. Check the county website for details.

ROSEMOUNT

No pay raises for mayor, council

Rosemount's mayor and council members won't be getting a raise in 2010. The council has voted to freeze its salaries at 2009 levels.

That means that the mayor's 2010 paycheck will total $8,280 and each council member will get $6,210.

The vote overrides a 3 percent increase planned as a result of a 2008 ordinance that gave council members automatic salary increases based on cost of living and other factors. It will save the city $998 in 2010.

BURNSVILLE

Ice Center rink named after Harker

Rink 1 at Burnsville Ice Center has been renamed the Gary R. Harker Rink in honor of the city's recently retired director of recreation and facilities.

Harker began his 23 years with the city in 1986, when he was named manager of the ice center.

Harker, a Duluth native, played high school and college hockey before moving on to coach the sport at the high school and college levels.

He developed state championship teams at Superior High School and built the program at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

He is a member of the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame and the University of Wisconsin-Superior Hall of Fame.

Harker currently scouts for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
