An apparent murder-suicide in an Eagan apartment went undetected for most of this month, police said today.

The bodies of a middle-aged man and an older woman were found shortly before noon Tuesday in the apartment, located in the 3900 block of Valley View Drive, police said.

Officers were sent there because of a request to check on someone's well being.

The woman appeared to have been shot and the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

It appears that both bodies had been in the apartment for up to two weeks. Because of the degree of decomposition, the Dakota County medical examiner's office is assisting in positively identifying the two.

Luigia R Fogolin, who lives in St. Paul, confirmed the woman as her twin sister, Marianne Fogolin, and the man as Marianne's son, Robert Ament.

Asked why this would've happened, Luigia Fogolin said: "yes I do, but I'm not going to talk about it."

She declined to say anything more.

Police said they have had no calls to that residence previously and emphasized that there is no apparent threat to public safety connected to these deaths.

This is the first homicide case in Eagan since 2005.
