Authorities suspect that alcohol may have contributed to a crash that killed two people late Thursday in Eagan.

Eagan police and firefighters responded to a report of a crash involving a wrong-way driver at the intersection of Cliff and Dodd Roads at 9:39 p.m.

A pickup truck headed east in the westbound lane of Cliff Road driven by Daniel John Schmidt, 53, of Eagan, collided with a car driven by Monica Oliveros Strout, 51, of Bloomington, authorities said. Strout died at the scene. Schmidt was pronounced dead after being taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles.

Alcohol was detected on Schmidt, authorities said. Eagan police and the State Patrol were assisting with the investigation.
