A Jordan man was charged Tuesday with multiple counts of attempted murder and assault for allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend and father in Chaska last week.

Joshua Gilpin, 38, appeared in Carver County District Court, where bail was set at $200,000. The judge said he must wear a GPS tracking device if he is able to secure release on bail.

According to the charges, Gilpin shot Heidi Robling, 29, in the neck, and Robert Gilpin, 60, in the chest, when he went to Robling's house Thursday night to drop off their 4-year-old son. Both victims are expected to recover from their wounds.

Before the shooting, Gilpin had threatened to kill Robling's new boyfriend and she had told police she believed her life was in danger, the charges say.

On Thursday night, Gilpin dropped off their son and followed Robling into the house. As she walked down some stairs, Gilpin asked, "Do you want me to kill you or your new boyfriend first?" the charges say. She screamed for help, at which point Gilpin shot his father, the charges say. He then shot Robling, who used her body to shield her son.

At one point, Gilpin held the gun to his own head, the charges say. He was arrested 14 hours later at his parents' home in Jordan.

Gilpin's next court appearance will be Friday.
