Special Olympics seeks volunteers

Special Olympics Minnesota is seeking 37 volunteers for the Area 9 Bocce Competition on Tuesday in Savage.

The event needs help with setup, awards, scorekeepers/competition and medics, who must be certified.

Volunteers must be at least 8 years old. All volunteers will receive a T-shirt and lunch. Previous experience with bocce ball is not required. Volunteers will undergo a day of training.

Volunteer shifts run from 11 a.m. to about 5 p.m. at the Savage Community Park, 13500 Dakota Av. S.

The Bazillions perform at library

The Bazillions, billed as "a fun, upbeat, musical group that kids and their adults will all enjoy" will perform from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the Jordan Library, 275 Creek Lane S. The show is funded by the Metropolitan Library Service Agency.

No spot-saving for parade, cruise

Residents and visitors are being warned not to place chairs, concrete blocks, blankets, stakes or any other objects along the street to save spots for the parade or for "Cruise Night" during the annual Pan-O-Prog celebration.

The Lakeville City Council, prompted by safety concerns, passed an ordinance that forbids items being used to hold spots before 9 a.m. on the day of the events. Items must be removed from the streets by midnight.

Cruise Night happens from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday when more than 500 classic cars cruise down Holyoke Avenue. The route has been changed this year because of road construction. The vehicles will stay in the city and not go south of County Road 70.

The Grand Parade will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Holyoke Avenue in downtown Lakeville.

PRIOR LAKE

Happy Birthday to Recs the mascot

A birthday celebration and free beach party for Recs, the mascot of the Prior Lake Recreation Department, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Sand Point Beach.

Activities will include face painting, fun hair coloring, games and crafts.

In case of bad weather, the party will be at Club Prior at the Prior Lake Library.

Paddleboard tour beneath a full moon

A stand-up paddleboard tour under a full moon will be held from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Cleary Lake Regional Park, 18106 Texas Av. in Prior Lake.

The tour is for people age 14 and over. Equipment will be provided. Previous paddleboard experience is recommended. The event costs $20 per person, or $21 with an optional donation. To register, go to www.threeriversparks.org and click on events.

Big band plays at Huber Park

The Jazz on the Prairie Big Band will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday as part of the Huber Park Performance and Events Series The show starts at 7 p.m. The park is located at 150 Fillmore St. N.

The Huber Park series provides free family entertainment on Thursdays and some Saturdays through August.

Police host virtual ride-along via Twitter

Shakopee police will participate in a "tweet-along" — a virtual ride-along — as they answer calls from 4 p.m. to midnight July 16. The department will use its Twitter account, @ShakopeePD, to post updates on what officers are doing. The hashtag for the ride-along is #SPDtweetalong.

Learn Google Docs with library class

Teenagers, adults and seniors can learn the basics of Google Docs, Google's version of word-processing, spreadsheets, forms and presentation software, at a class Tuesday.

The class is hands-on and participants will learn how to create, manage and collaborate using the software. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Professional Development Center at the Scott County Government Center, 200 4th Av. W.

To register, call any Scott County Library. Class size is limited to 16.
