Police were called late Saturday night to an area near Hope Lutheran Church in Jordan in response to a report of a gunman in the area but said a woman had been hit in the head by a man with a gun and no shots were fired.

In a statement early Sunday, Jordan police called the incident, which happened about 9 p.m., a domestic assault inside the church. The woman had an injury that was not life-threatening and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Initial reports provided "conflicting information" of what had happened, including one report that a shot had been fired in the church, Jordan police said. "Initial media reports that a shooting had occurred were unfounded."

Authorities had not located the man as of early Sunday, but they had talked to him on the phone and he had left Jordan "and he is aware law enforcement is looking for him," the police statement said, adding that he was not believed to be "a direct threat to the general public."
