Free rides are being offered on light rail and buses this weekend as the new outlet mall has its grand opening in Eagan.
Transit and city officials are hoping to take advantage of the event to raise awareness of the Red Line, the fast busway that runs along Cedar Avenue
The mall, called Twin Cities Premium Outlets, is located near the intersection of Hwy. 13 and Cedar. It opened on Thursday, a short walk from the busway’s Cedar Grove Station.
Free rides are being offered through the end of this weekend on the Red and Blue lines, meaning fast buses and trains, and on local bus routes 437, 438, 440, 444, 445, 472 and 475.
Sunday times for those rides are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

City’s reminder on summer water use
With dry spells this summer at times, officials in Apple Valley are issuing reminders on water usage rules.
Through Sept. 30. irrigation systems or sprinklers can be used only before 11 a.m. or after 6 p.m. That means all properties, including folks drawing from private wells, ponds, and lakes. Exemptions apply to new sod and to trees planted in 2014.
Other activities exempted are hand watering of plants (but hose must be attended), children’s water toys as long as the kids are really using them, and vehicle washing.
