‘Sea Wing Disaster’ is author’s topic

Fred Johnson, author of the “The Sea Wing Disaster of 1890,” will be the guest writer at the LeDuc Historic Estate next Sunday.

The book concerns a 1890 overturning of an excursion boat on Lake Pepin, claiming 98 lives.

Johnson lives in Cottage Grove after growing up in Red Wing.

The writer’s great grandfather, Carl Oscar Anderson, transported disaster victims to local funeral homes. He himself has been a local newspaper columnist.

The historic estate is located at 1629 Vermillion St., Hastings. The event is at 5 p.m. All are invited, although organizers encourage $2 donations.

There is also a 6:30 p.m. concert, music by The Squires, sponsored by the Hastings Concert Association in the apple orchard behind the LeDuc House.

Pie, ice cream, brownies and beverages will be available for purchase from a nonprofit organization.

The LeDuc Historic Estate is owned by the city of Hastings and managed by the Dakota County Historical Society. More information is at or call 651-437-7055.
