Principal visits Ghana for a week

Eric Bradley, principal at Moreland Arts and Health Sciences Magnet School in West St. Paul, recently returned to Minnesota after spending a week in Ghana.

The goal of the visit to West Africa was to build a relationship with The Light Academy School, a K-12 school that is developing a science curriculum with the InSciEd Out program, just like Moreland.

The InSciEd Out (Integrated Science Education Outreach) program assists schools in integrating science into all parts of the school day and curriculum.

Last year, Moreland partnered with the Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota to bring InSciEd Out to the school. Third and fourth-graders worked with university students and scientists from Mayo Clinic to conduct health and wellness experiments. Next year, the program will expand to other grades at Moreland as well as Heritage E-STEM Magnet School.

Bradley traveled to Ghana with the director of InSciEd Out, a scientist from Mayo and representatives from a Rochester, Minn., school to get to know staff and students at the The Light Academy School.

In the future, Moreland and the West African school may conduct parallel science experiments and learn about both science and culture together, Bradley explained in his blog. Bradley’s blog can be found at http://tinyurl.com/nak3c8u
