Cellist to perform with Bakken Trio

Twin Cities chamber music group the Bakken Trio will present a French-themed coffee concert at the Lakeville Area Arts Center at 2 p.m. Sunday, focusing on music from France before World War I.

Guest cellist Wilhelmina Smith, a frequent soloist at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Boston Chamber Music Society, will perform Debussy's Cello Sonata with Judy Lin. Bakken's violinist, Stephanie Arado, collaborates with Lin on Ravel's jazz-based Violin Sonata. The trio expands to a quartet with the addition of University of Minnesota viola professor Korey Konkol to conclude the program with the Faure Piano Quartet in c minor.

Family-friendly 5k race is May 18

A family-friendly 5K race in Lakeville next month will raise funds for Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Minnesota (PPSM).

The Daisy Dash 5K is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18 at Steve Michaud Park, 17100 Ipava Av. Face-painting (for a fee) and free balloon animals will be offered, as well as a raffle for adults.

PPSM is a group of mental health and perinatal practitioners, service organizations and mother volunteers offering emotional support and treatment to Minnesota families through the perinatal years. For more information on the group, see www.ppsup portmn.org.

Young artists to join symphony on April 27

The winners of this year's Young Artist Competition will join the Dakota Valley Symphony for its season-ending show at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the Ames Center, formerly the Burnsville Performing Arts Center.

The young artists featured are:

• Kathryn Rupp, a senior at Prior Lake Senior High School, a classical vocalist who will sing "V'adoro pupille" from Handel's "Julius Caesar." She has received many vocal awards and studied at Boston University Tangelwood Institute and Minnesota's Opera's Project Opera. She plans to pursue a degree in vocal performance this fall at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

• Julian Maddox, a 16-year-old violinist who attends Breck School, will perform the first movement of Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto." Maddox studies violin with Sally O'Reilly at the University of Minnesota School of Music and has held a principal position in the University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra. He has performed and studied in Pienza, Italy, at the Italy Summer Music Festival. He plans to pursue a career as a violinist.

The orchestra also will welcome back the Health Sciences Orchestra of the University of Minnesota in a joint performance of Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 4."

Eagan grad debuts choral works

The Minnesota Valley Men's and Women's Chorales will premiere two pieces composed by Eagan graduate Jason Hansen this week.

The commissioned choral works will debut in two spots on two nights:

• 7:30 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, 7800 W. 150th St., Apple Valley, and

• 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Lakeville North High School, 19600 Ipava Av.

Tickets for each are $10.

The piece called "Look To This Day" is performed by the Minnesota Valley Men's Chorale, and "Listen To The Children" features the Men's Chorale, the Minnesota Valley Women's Chorale, and children from Prima Voce and Angelica Cantani youth choirs.

Hansen is a 2005 graduate of Eagan High School who now lives in St. Paul. He is youth music director for Easter Lutheran Church, Eagan, and has conducted for the Eagan Summer Theater.

Lyrics for "Listen To The Children" are by Larry Sagen, brother of Women's Chorale director and retired Eastview Concert Choir director Judy Sagen.

South Metro Chorale to perform oratorio

The South Metro Chorale presents "Haydn: The Crea­tion," directed by Russell Adrian, at two performances in early May.

The oratorio, written between 1796 and 1798 by Austrian composer Joseph Haydn, depicts the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis and in John Milton's "Paradise Lost." "SMC is excited and proud to share this masterwork with our patrons," the chorale said in a written statement.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. May 2 at Glendale United Methodist Church, 13550 Glendale Road, Savage, and 3 p.m. May 4 at St. Richard's Catholic Church, 7450 Penn Av. S., Richfield. Carleton celebrates Shakespeare's 450th

Carleton College is throwing a birthday part for the Bard, with performances, displays and refreshments in honor of William Shakespeare's 450th birthday. The event is 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in Room 172 of the Weitz Center for Creativity. The celebration is free and open to the public.

Plays by Shakespeare, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist, have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

College's festival will salute the fine arts

Inver Hills Community College invites the public to its to the third annual Fine Arts Festival Wednesday and Thursday.

The festival allowing attendees to meet faculty and guest presenters during a variety of workshops and demonstrations. Offerings include hands-on music, art and thea­ter workshops, a song contest, a choir performance, student-directed one-act plays and all-day drop-in painting, photography and sculpting.
