Public invited to holiday concerts

The bands and choirs at Burnsville High School will perform at several December concerts that are open to the public. All shows will be at the recently-updated Mraz Center for the Performing Arts, which is connected to the high school at 600 E. Highway 13, Burnsville.

At 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 6, there will be two choir concerts for the price of one. First, the Blaze Choir, Women's Chorus, FreeStyle and BHS Madrigal Singers, a new singing group, will perform. Then, at 8 p.m., Bel Canto, FreeStyle, Concert Choir and BHS Madrigal Singers will sing. The concerts will feature a number of well-known holiday songs. Each show is $3 and anyone who pays for the first show can stay for the second at no additional charge. Tickets are available in the BHS main office before the show or at the door.

Choir directors are Martha Schmidt and Erik Akervik.

In addition, at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12, the Varsity Band and Jazz Ensemble will play, and at 7 p.m. on Dec. 19, the Symphonic Band and Concert Band will perform. The band directors are Keith French and Molly Holmes.

Adult Basic Education volunteers needed

Dakota Prairie Adult Basic Education (ABE) is looking for literacy volunteers for its English Language Learner program.

Classes are held from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and 6 to 8:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Community Education Center, Room 118, at Meadow­view Elementary School, 6100 195th St. W. in Farmington.
