Health services director wins statewide award
Dawn Willson, director of health services in District 191, was named the 2013 School Nurse Administrator of the Year by the School Nurse Organization of Minnesota.
The award is given to a school nurse administrator who exemplifies excellence. Willson received the award at the group’s annual conference on Nov. 2.
Willson supervises the district’s 19 school health offices, as well as one nonpublic school. During her time in the role, she has worked to make dental, health and medical services more accessible to students.
In collaboration with the University of Minnesota, Willson will begin working on a grant this year to help combat childhood obesity in the district.
Faithful Shepherd to hold craft boutique
Faithful Shepherd Catholic School, a K-8 school in Eagan, will hold its annual Holiday Classic Boutique from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23.
The event will feature more than 70 crafters, artists and retailers selling jewelry, food, doll clothes, clothing and glassware.
The event is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $2. It will be held at the school and parish center, located at 3355 Columbia Drive, Eagan. Signs will be posted instructing visitors where to park.
All day, every day kindergarten coming
Shakopee will begin offering kindergarten all day, every day at no charge beginning in the fall of 2014, and to accommodate the additional students, the school board approved additions to all five of the district’s elementary schools. Each school will get four new classrooms.
The district’s Teaching and Learning Department also has formed a committee of teachers and administrators to work out the details of implementing all-day kindergarten.
The committee will discuss which skills students should be taught, how to measure those skills, classroom design and scheduling.
