Ken Barlow at mental health awareness event

Local meteorologist Ken Barlow will speak at a mental health awareness event aimed at parents, students, teachers and other community members.

The free event will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 28 at Hosanna Church Chapel at 9600 163rd St. in Lakeville. Enter door five to get to the chapel.

The evening is sponsored by Dakota County Healthy Communities Collaborative. After Barlow speaks, there will be a panel discussion.

St. Thomas Academy

Rifle team named national champions

The St. Thomas Academy rifle team has been named “Sporter Standing National Champions” by the National Rifle Association.

Competitions took place at the state level earlier this year, and scores were tallied this summer, with the Cadets earning first place.

Members of the team were Tyler Johnson, Madden Chapman, Patrick Cramer, Sam Supplee and Nicholas Caspers. Paul Preblich is the team’s moderator.

 

Burnsville- Eagan-Savage

Parents needed for curriculum committee

District 191 is looking for parents to serve on the Student Achievement and Systems Improvement Advisory Council.

The committee’s purpose is to ensure the community participates in curriculum and instruction planning. Parents serve as volunteers on the committee for a term that will end in July 2015.

The committee meets three or four times during the school year at the Diamondhead Education Center. One parent from each of 14 district schools will be selected.

Farmington

District reviewing attendance areas

Farmington Area Public Schools is in the process of reviewing 2014-15 attendance areas for its elementary and middle schools. The school board is anticipating making a decision on new boundaries in November.

Adjustments are needed to correct enrollment imbalances, account for population growth and accommodate all-day kindergarten which will begin next fall in the district.

The attendance area committee is currently looking through data and will develop several options and recommendations for the school board. The board will present options at its Monday, Oct. 14, meeting, with several public open houses to follow.
