The Dakota County Library will sponsor a series of nonpartisan discussion forums about American foreign policy issues from Tuesday to Nov. 12 at Galaxie Library, 14955 Galaxie Av., Apple Valley.
Each program will include a presenter with expertise on the topic. Participants are invited to read the Great Decisions booklet available at the Galaxie Library information desk.
The programs are as follows:
On Tuesday, the discussion will focus on the questions: “How can the United States address the challenges of a weak economy, homegrown terrorism and nuclear proliferation? What threats and opportunities are presented by the ascendancy of China and regime changes in the Middle East?’’
On Oct. 15, the discussion is described as follows: “Suspicion and a troubled history have blighted U.S.-Iranian relations for three decades. How can the U.S. and Iran move forward? Is the existence of Iran’s nuclear program an insurmountable obstacle?’’
The Oct. 29 discussion will involve: “How has the NATO agenda evolved since its inception during the Cold War? With its military commitment in Afghanistan winding down and a recent successful campaign in Libya, what are the Alliance’s present-day security challenges?’’
The Nov. 12 discussion is described as follows: “The responsibility to protect doctrine has become central to modern humanitarian intervention. When should the international community intervene? Why did the West rush to intervene in Libya but not Syria?’’
All the programs run from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
