Free outdoor pops concert is Sunday

A free outdoor concert by the Minnesota Sinfonia at Caponi Art Park on Sunday will feature a family-friendly lineup of Broadway and movie tunes, marches, polkas and rags.

It's the annual pops concert from the sinfonia, a professional chamber orchestra. It will include music from "Les Miserables" and "My Fair Lady," as well as Strauss' waltzes. Showtime is 7 p.m.

Their performance is part of the park's Summer Performance Series, which features music, theater and dance concerts on Sunday evenings in the Theater in the Woods outdoor amphitheater.

Fireworks, hot dogs at Canterbury

Canterbury Park will hold its annual fireworks spectacular after its July 3 races and have a hot-dog-eating contest and wiener dog race — with free hot dogs for the crowd — on July 4.

Gates open at the Shakopee racetrack at 2:30 p.m. on July 3 with the first race at 4 p.m. The fireworks, choreographed to music, will begin about 10 p.m.

Hot dog contest hopefuls should e-mail kulrich@canterburypark.com. July 4 will also be Family Day, with free pony rides, a petting zoo and face painting. After the final race of the day, children will be allowed to run the track. Gates open at noon on July 4 with the first race at 1:30 p.m.

Admission on both July 3 and 4 is free for anyone 17 and under, $5 for 18 and older, and $3 with a Canterbury MVP Card.

NORTHFIELD

Shakespeare in park

The Northfield Arts Guild Theater will stage the Shakespeare comedy Twelfth Night in Central Park the next two weekends.

The show is 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday and June 27-29. Central Park is between 3rd and 4th streets and Winona and College streets in Northfield.

The show is being directed by Susan Dunhaupt and features local actors Taylor Heirman, Elin Odegaard, Birch Carlson, Rolf Kragseth, Deesa Staats, Jon Terrill, Charlie Black, Bryan Reed, Kate Southwick, Wendy Placko, Dick Brown, John Hall, Bill Simonet, Danica Simonet and Brenda Kragseth.

PRIOR LAKE

Summer concerts set through August

The city of Prior Lake's free summer concert series in Lakefront Park is underway, with performances at 7 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 29.

This week's show features the Squires Band. A battle of the bands will be held during the July 18 show, and the Aug. 9 show coinciding with Lakefront Days will feature the Okee Dokee Brothers.
