3rd-graders to say why they love Burnsville

Burnsville third-graders may participate in a "I Love Burnsville Week" essay contest by writing an answer to why they love living in Burnsville. Entries in the single-page essay contest must be received at Burnsville City Hall by May 24.

The contest is sponsored by the U.S. Federal Credit Union of Burnsville, which will give $50 each to three winning students and their schools.

Winners will be invited to read their essays at 6:30 p.m. at the June 4 meeting of the City Council.

DAKOTA COUNTY

Property tax deadline is May 15

Property taxes for the first half of 2013 are due May 15.

Counties assess late-payment penalties that depend on the tax amount, the property classification and when the payment is made.

Taxes may be paid online, by phone or by mail. Mailed payments must be postmarked by midnight May 15 to meet the deadline.

Walk-in payments are also accepted at county offices.

Bulky items will be picked up at the curb

Unwanted bulky items, including electronics and appliances, will be picked up at the curb in front of homes in Burnsville from June 3-15.

Buckingham Disposal will offer a discount on curbside pickup during "I Love Burnsville Week." Call to schedule pickup and arrange payment at 952-226-6441.

Arrangements for pickup must be made by noon the day before weekly garbage collection day, and residents must mention the "I Love Burnsville" promotion to receive the reduced rates. Pickup will be on the same day as weekly garbage collection.

Costs include $3 to $15 for furniture; $18 to $28 for sofas; $15 for entertainment centers; $15 to $25 for exercise equipment; $15 for household appliances; $15 to $55 for TVs; $15 for mattresses, and $15 for computer sets.
